Burlington Arcade

The Burlington Arcade, an upmarket shopping mall, just off Piccadilly, was opened in 1819. Under Lord George Cavendish it employed its own bouncers (wearing Edwardian frock coats and gold-braided top hats) to ensure proper behaviour.

The Beadle’s job was to ensure there was no singing, humming, running, dancing or opening umbrellas.

Today this is still the case….

Heaven help you if you want to sing in the rain!
