In the late 1600s a group of unruly ladies hired a Hackney carriage to take them to Hyde Park. In the Park they ‘behaved disgracefully and deliberately insulted some very distinguished people’. Because of their inappropriate behaviour, hackneys (the forerunners of today’s taxis) were banned from the Royal Park until 1687. But, due to ‘several disorders’ being committed in the Park the ban was reinstated in 1711 and not lifted until 1924, 213 years later.
Fingers crossed everyone behaves themselves this time….
